Duke of Ashbury’s was very smart to recognize Emma as gem. Emma was so focused on solving her immediate problem with her landlord that she didn't understand his proposal.
She was smart enough to understand his needs for a wife.
There were scenes where Emma was humiliated by his ex fiancée and how she handled that situations.
